Mid-century modern ranch kitchen remodel that rocks!

I am not sure how I feel about the butter yellow, but the stainless cabinets and appliances with steel blue counter tops are incredible. The eat in dining area has a metallic taupe, vinyl bench seat that surrounds an antique granite table! Replace the vintage looking lamp with something more robotic and it's perfect! I'll take it!

Name That Ranch

Miller Ranch? Casa Grande? Rancho Ocotillo? Or maybe after one of the heirloom tomato varieties?

How about Mortgage Lifter Ranch, which has a GREAT story? From wiki:

Mortgage Lifter is the name given to a cultivar of tomato developed by M.C. Byles, also known as "Radiator Charlie", because he used it to save his house, selling it for a dollar per plant (back in the 1940s) in order to pay off his mortgage. When his radiator repair business slumped during the Great Depression, Byles started cross-breeding his four best tomato plants, until he came up with a stable derivation which he felt tasted better and had larger fruit.[1] He promoted it as being able to feed a family of six, therefore asking for and getting the sky-high price of one dollar per plant, and paying off his $6,000 house mortgage in just four years.

Bryan likes Big Rainbow Ranch. From wiki:

Big Rainbow – One of dozens of large fruited yellow tomatoes with red swirls, having a mild, sweet flavor. Hillbilly, below, is another. According to some sources, tomatoes of this color were never sold by American seed companies; their origin is not known.

My two favorites are Early Girl Ranch and Green Zebra Ranch. I think the kids would like Green Zebra, but Early Girl just sounds cool. From wiki:

Green Zebra – Often called an heirloom, it is not. It is an open-pollinated cultivar bred from four heirloom varieties and released by Tom Wagner of Lancaster, Kansas in 1983.

The Early Girl tomato is a medium globe type F1 hybrid popular with home gardeners because of its early fruit ripening. Early Girl is an indeterminate variety. It is tall growing and needs support as the plant grows. Fruit maturity claims range from 50 to 62 days from transplanting, which appeals to growers in climates with shorter frost-free seasons.

Modern Potential

Of course I can't quit thinking about the Ahwatukee house. Could it be our diamond in the rough!

I found this image of a modernized A-frame. I think it is a good point of reference, since the Ahwatukee house is not a typical block construction.
The sky light in the top of this house could work for the front over hang "thing" of the Ahwatukee house.

While, I would not do this much open design in the desert (the house faces East / West),
I like the big windows and would likely shutter them and add a concrete raised bed (above) of either palms or bamboo, since 1/2 of our family is severely allergic to desert plant life.

Thrashed Awatukee house has dream house potential!

The location of this house is AMAZING! It is selling for 70% less than it foreclosed at in December 2010! A SWEET deal that COULD, and I stress COULD, be our next move.

Check out the stats and pictures of its thrashed-ness here!

Thinking about a hope chest...

Not really sure how to shop for something like this, as storing old junk is not exactly a modern minimalist thing to do. But I really need an alternative to the plastic bin motif I have going on now. This one is the Zocalo - 3034 - Sterling Park Trunk in Dark Cherry.

Rocio Romero, My First Love!

http://www.rocioromero.com/home.htm

Can't help but think this is going to be our dream-home. Bryan showed this to me years ago, and I still think about it when I think of homes I'd like to build.
